Fishing in the Sooke and Port Renfrew area is starting to heat up. With the good summer weather upon us it makes for a good day on the water.
There are chinooks being caught in all the regular fishing holes, although not hot and heavy yet. There are some quality catches hitting the docks and the pinks are starting to show as well.
John Lum of Devonian Charters had a great day on Friday the 13th off Logan Creek in Port Renfrew. After a good day out at the Swiftsure fishing with Sooke highliner Havey Woods, Lum was trolling along the beach when they tied into a 85-pound halbut on salmon gear. After reloading their gear they nailed a 42-pound chinook in the same place minutes later — now that’s fishing karma.
Bruce Millar of Millar Time Charters on the same day battled a chinook for almost two hours at Woods Nose in Port San Juan. The fish weighed 44 pounds, not a bad way to end a day. Out at the Swiftsure the coho are on fire with limit catches of hatchery coho up to 12 pounds.
Tip of the week: fish glow teaser heads early in the morning and as the sun comes up change over to chrome or clear coloured teaser heads trolled behind a five to six foot leader with glo or purple haze flashers and as the day goes on fish deeper up a 120 feet. For pink salmon use a pink or red hoochie or squirt with three-foot leader trolled behind a green chrome flasher.
Keep your rod tip up.

Island Outfitters reported:
Salt Water Fishing for July 15
Overview
Salmon fishing was FAIR TO PRETTY GOOD this past week. Halibut fishing was FAIR due to the dogfish stealing most of the baits. The pink salmon run is getting stronger and most anglers in Sooke are catching them.
Port Renfrew
Halibut fishing has been AWESOME at Swiftsure Bank and most guides are getting limits every day. The coho are on the bank now too. Closer in and along the beach, springs are being caught but it’s not red hot yet. There are some pinks and coho coming from near the beach as well.
Sooke
Salmon fishing was FAIR TO EXCELLENT this past week, depending on what type of salmon you’re targeting. Anglers fishing for pinks were getting limits out on the tide lines and some good catches close in as well. Anglers fishing for springs are finding it much more hit and miss. The most productive places to fish were Secretary (Donaldson) Island and Possession Point. Gary Garrinton landed a 35 lb spring this past week. Gerry Vervoort caught 30, 19, 18 & 17 lb springs on the weekend. Anchovies are catching the majority of fish, so try Rhys Davis Anchovy Specials or JDF Teasers in Purple/Chrome, Bloody Nose or Purple Haze. The best flashers have been the Purple Haze and the Betsey. With spoons try Watermelon, Mongoose or Green/Nickel color combinations with 4”, Gypsies and Titans. The best plastic baits to try are Purple Haze, Army Tuck or Green/White hootchies or squirts for springs and pink plankton for pink salmon.
HALIBUT Halibut fishing was SLOW because not too many anglers tried for the big flatties last week. Extra Large herring and/or octopus are the most popular baits, however, there are lots of dogfish around so you can try Mudraker or Lucky Jigs or the new Glow in the Dark bullet Jig with Berkley or Delta grubs if they are a problem.
